Abstract

Lu Yao (路遥, real name Wang Weiguo 王卫国, 1949–1992) – a prominent representative in the galaxy of Chinese writers, whose work developed in the mainstream of “literature reforms”. His main works are the stories “A touching scene” («惊心动魄的一幕», 1980), “Destiny” («人生», 1982) and “Hard Times” («在困难的日子里», 1982), the novel “The Ordinary World” («平凡的世界», 1986–1989), etc. – are devoted to the description for the life of rural residents in the ShanXi (陕西) mountainous region during the economic reforms of the 1970s – 1980s. In the literary works of Lu Yao, the portrayal of female characters is distinguished by variety and realistic typing. This article examines the image of an intelligent woman, portrayed by the writer in various works, in which the tragic fate of the heroines ends with varying degrees of tension, contributing to the process of sublimation of the corresponding images. The focus of attention is the image of the intelligent city dweller Huan Yaping from the story “Destiny”, whose love ended in a tragic break with her beloved person because of her selfishness. The heroine does not try to overcome the utilitarian needs, which the author is trying to sublimate into individualistic ideals. The sublime intelligent girl Tian Xiaoxia from the novel “The Ordinary World” also could not marry her lover Sun Shaoping – she died. The tragedy happened when young people experienced ideal love, which evokes sympathy and relief at the same time: social conflicts are sublimated into wonderful relationships between lovers that cannot be destroyed by status, material interests and other real factors.
