ПЕРЕКЛАД ПОЕЗІЇ КИТАЮ ЧАСІВ ДИНАСТІЇ ТАН: МІЖКУЛЬТУРНА АДАПТАЦІЯ СЛІВ-РЕАЛІЙ

Abstract

The paradigm of our study is the peculiarities of translating Tang Dynasty poetry into English, in particular, translation strategies and methods of adapting purely Chinese concepts when translating into English. The purpose of the article is to analyse some of the methods used by translators in interpreting purely Chinese concepts and cultural words and to consider them in terms of their relevance to the original work. The problem of translating poetry is urgent in the field of translation studies, where each translator has their own attitudes and opinions on how to convey information to the reader. Lexical inconsistencies are present even in related languages, which is why a translation can be unsuccessful, inaccurate, and imperfect. As for languages that have almost no common features, translators face more challenges when translating poetry. An important element of every poem is its structure, metrics, rhythm and rhyme. When reproducing a work into another language, translators must preserve all these, but given that it is impossible to reproduce a poetic text perfectly, translators resort to replacing rhyming parts or to compensate for the lost element in another part of the poem. This technique has long been relevant for most works written in Indo-European languages, but the situation is more difficult with Oriental poetry. Chinese poetry is unfamiliar to European audiences; it is filled with allusions, comparisons, and concepts that the average reader has never heard of. The works are culturally rich, often referring to names, events, cities and spiritual places, the interpretation of which is always difficult to translate into English. Thus, there is still no standardized methodology for translating Chinese poetry. When working with a text, translators bring various elements of the original work to the forefront, and so the question of what is best to preserve from the original work and how to convey concepts and notions that are incomprehensible to native English speakers remains open, which makes this study topical.
