Abstract
Overseas Chinese literature is a relatively new branch of science, therefore the development of approaches to the study and analysis of Overseas Chinese writings is considered timely and relevant. The article focuses on the study of current-day discussions about the status of Overseas Chinese literature in the world, about its involvement in the discourses of “national” literature, as well as about its literary and aesthetic originality. The article studies the prerequisites and justifications for the controversial definitions and conceptual structures of Overseas Chinese literature, such as Overseas Chinese-language literature, Global Chinese literature, new Chinese literature, specific interliterary community, global Chinese-language literature, world literature in Chinese, world literature by Chinese, Sinophone literature. Particular attention is paid to its historical, linguistic, cultural, and aesthetic aspects. The article determines the particular features of Overseas Chinese literature, which are manifested mainly in its global presence in different parts of the world, and in its marginal and cross-cultural nature, as it localizes in-between other cultures. All this constitutes grounds for special poetics employed in the Overseas Chinese writings. Taking into account that Overseas Chinese literature of different regions and countries possesses its own unique features and history of development but is characterized by a common linguistic and cultural source, the article proposes scientific approaches to the study of its poetics. The application of the theories and methods of comparative literary criticism, and imagological methodology, allow to reveal the multiple dimensions of the Overseas Chinese literature, which is localized in various other cultures, possess a hundred “selves” and contains impulses for comparative study and transnational interpretation. It is argued that the discourse of identity remains an important reference point in the study of literary and cultural phenomena of the present-day world, and in particular in the problematic field of Overseas Chinese literature.
