Abstract

The goal of the paper is to study the Chinese “Belt and Road Initiative”, first of all, in the context of its specific economic content and to analyze the prospects of the investment and trade economic policy of China in regard to the involved groups and countries. Myanmar is a key link in China’s geopolitical plans. It occupies a strategic geographical position between China and India, and connects Southeast Asia with South Asia. This article investigates the policy of the PRC leadership on building a new type of bilateral relations with the Asian country, the process of formation and implementation of the China-Myanmar economic corridor (CMEC), the challenges and problems that China faces when implementing “Belt and Road Initiative” on the example of CMEC. The research shows that China considers the territory of Myanmar, as well as other countries of the region, like a “section” of the “Belt and Road”. Implementation of projects within the framework of the Chinese initiative is carried out on the principles of general consultation, joint work and mutual benefit, consideration and integration of development strategies of all participating countries. In the future, the fulfilling of the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor will contribute to the economic development of not only China and Myanmar, but also will stimulate regional cooperation and strengthen mutual understanding between the cultures of all countries along the Belt and Road. At the same time, the successful implementation of CMEC will provide China a direct, land access to the Indian Ocean, which will significantly strengthen the Beijing’s position in the Indo-Pacific region, which has consistently and firmly entered in the realm of its priority interests.
