Abstract

The article deals with the concept of linguistic intersubjectivity in the context of the analysis of the functions of modal markers in modern Chinese. The research shows that the concept of intersubjectivity is currently a popular object of study in linguistics. Intersubjectivity is qualified as the highest degree of development of subjectivity, and is considered to be a mechanism of manifestation of the speaker’s attitude to the recipient. Analysis of the category of intersubjectivity is another level of analysis of the category of modality. In this context the study of the epistemic modality becomes prior, as it reflects the individual position of the speaker in the speech, reveals the communicative intention. Studying the concept of intersubjectivity, the most important is not the analysis of the context itself, but the linguistic means that create it (language markers and expressions), as their main semantic or pragmatic meaning is to show the speaker’s point of view and the speaker’s attention to the addressee’s feelings and thoughts. Thus, language markers, with modal markers (modal verbs, modal adverbs, modal particles) in particular, become a mechanism for expressing an awareness of the speaker about the attitude and beliefs of the listener. The article presents an analysis of how modal markers through their basic function implement an additional (intersubjective) function. The article demonstrates different types of intersubjectivity (attitudinal, responsive and textual), as well as how this function is realized in the speech by means of language markers in modern Chinese. The research is devoted to the analysis of the connection between the concepts of subjectivity and intersubjectivity, and how modal markers serve this function, and also how the speaker’s attitude to the situation is realized in the speech, and the listener becomes a full-fledged subject of the communicative process.
