Abstract

This research paper provides a comprehensive examination of the evolving role and symbolism of the May Fourth Movement in China’s patriotic education campaign over the recent decades. The May Fourth Movement, a watershed moment in Chinese history, continues to occupy a central place in shaping national identity and promoting ideological conformity. This study delves into how the Chinese government has strategically harnessed the historical significance of this movement to achieve specific political and educational objectives. In recent years, the May Fourth Movement has been selectively emphasized in patriotic education campaigns. This campaign has sought to underscore its patriotic and anti-imperialist elements while often downplaying its more radical and democratic aspects. While the May Fourth Movement did encompass calls for political reforms and intellectual freedom, contemporary patriotic education efforts tend to place greater emphasis on its role as a symbol of patriotic resistance and national rejuvenation. This selective focus raises questions about the balance between historical accuracy and the political necessity of crafting a narrative that aligns with the current goals of the Chinese Communist Party. The Chinese government’s efforts to promote the May Fourth Movement as a symbol of national unity and rejuvenation have been evident in various forms, including through educational curricula, textbooks, museums, and public commemorations. It plays a vital role in shaping the collective memory of the nation, thereby fostering loyalty to the CCP and its leadership. This research paper also highlights the dynamic nature of the May Fourth Movement’s image in the context of patriotic education. It demonstrates how different Chinese leaders have shaped and reinterpreted this narrative to align with their political agendas. From the era of Mao Zedong to the post-Maoist period and the time of Xi Jinping, the portrayal of the May Fourth Movement has evolved to suit the prevailing political climate and the goals of the CCP. The study suggests that the Chinese government’s use of the May Fourth Movement in patriotic education campaign reflects broader patterns and strategies employed to shape historical narratives in service of political objectives. It underscores the interplay between history, ideology, and contemporary politics in China’s governance dynamics. In conclusion, this research paper sheds light on the role and symbolism of the May Fourth Movement in China’s recent patriotic education campaigns. It elucidates how the movement’s image has been carefully curated to align with the current priorities of the Chinese government and the CCP’s leadership. This historical narrative continues to play a significant role in shaping national identity, promoting ideological conformity, and reinforcing the authority of the Chinese Communist Party in contemporary China.
