Abstract

The article is devoted to the place and meaming of China in the ideology of Japanese Pan-Asianism during the formation of this trend (1868–1900). Particular attention is paid to the first Pan-Asianist organization Association for the Advancement of Asia (Sin'asha) and its successor, Raising Asia Society (Koakai). Also, the ideological aspects of the early Dark Ocean Society (Genyosha), Oriantal Society (Toho kyokai), East Asian Common Culture Society (Toa dobunkai) etc. are considered. The article also analyzes the changes that have occurred as a result of Japan-Chinese War of 1894-1895., and led to a strengthening of the imperialist tendency in the Pan-Asian movement. In this context, Konoe Atsumaro’s ideas deserve attention. Finally, the views of educators and liberals associated with the Movement for Freedom and People's Rights (Jiyu minken undo), such as Fukuzawa Yukichi, Tarui Tokichi, Ueki Emor, and Nakae Chomin are considered as well.
