Abstract

“The Song of Mulan” («木兰辞») is a folk song of the era of the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420–589) in China. The work, which is considered a “pair of literary jewels”, together with the poem “Peacocks fly to the southeast”, was included in the “Collection of Yuefu Poems”. While scholars debate its exact date of composition, the oldest recorded account suggests that it was created no later than the Chen Dynasty. The poem narrates the story of a young woman who disguises herself as a man and goes to war in place of her father. It follows a simple structure, capturing Mulan’s journey from preparation for battle to her triumphant return home. The translation of “The Ballad of Mulan” aims to convey its profound values and universal themes, resonating with the contemporary world. Its relevance lies in reminding us of the strength and potential within each individual, regardless of gender or social expectations. The poem reflects universal themes of self-determination, the awakening of one’s potential, and the struggle against stereotypes that remain pertinent in today’s society.
